Hello Ms. Sayong,

as promised I am sending you the schedule for Cine Europa.

Entrance to the screenings is free.

-- Best regards,

Brenda

Cine Europa 12 will take place at Shangri-La Plaza, Sept 11 to 20

Eighteen European films will be screened in the 12th edition of Cine Europa. They will be screened at Shangri-La Plaza Mandaluyong from Sept 11-20; at Liceo de Cagayan De Oro from October 2-4 and Ayala Center Cebu from October 9-11, 2009.

Cine Europa 12 will take place at Shangri-La Plaza, Sept 11 to 20

Now on it's 12th year of offering powerful and touching European films to the Philippines, the popular film festival opens on September 10, 2009, with public screenings from September 11 to 20 at the Shang Cineplex, Shangri-La Plaza, Mandaluyong City.

Cine Europa 12 will be opened by Ambassador Alistair MacDonald, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to the Philippines, Mr. Alvaro Trejo, deputy head of Mission of Spain representing the Presidency of the European Union, Atty. Andy Bautista, chairman and CEO of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation and Ms. Lala Fojas, executive vice-president and general manager of Shangri-La Plaza Corporation.

Through a collaboration between the Goethe Institut in Manila and the EU Cultural Group and Shangri-La Plaza, the festival will also be featuring a panel discussion animated by German film experts Eberhard Junkersdorf, Dennis Gansel and Dr. Peter Zimmermann at the Shang Cineplex's Premiere Theatre on September 11 from 10:30 to 11:30 am.

This year, eighteen European films―from Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Romania, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom― were carefully handpicked to cater to Filipino audiences. Opening the festival is Swedish film Grabeen I Graven Bredvid (The Guy in the Grave Next Door) by Kjell Sundvall, a contemporary romance between a farmer and a city girl.

Germany's Dennis Gansel tackles the underpinnings of fascism via the energetic and gripping drama Die Welle (The Wave). Four teenaged boys lose their innocence during what is to be their last summer together in the Belgian film De Laatste Zomer (The Last Summer) by Joost Wynant. From France comes the Julie Lopes Curval-directed Toi Et Moi (You and Me), a story of two sisters striving to find true love.

Jan Sverak brings to the silver screen the tale of 3 lives caught in the middle of war via the Czech Republic's Tmavomodry Svet (Dark Blue World). Life is not lived in fantasies and exotic dreams, in Danish director Ole Bomedal's film Kaerlighed Pa Film (Just Another Love Story) wherein the truth catches up with everyone eventually. Finland's Joulutarina (Christmas Story) by Juha Wuolijoki is the touching tale of how Santa came to be. Four young rascals wreak havoc in 1960s Berne, Switzerland in Michael Stenier's Mein Name Ist Eugen (Rascals on the Road).

The U.K.'s Saul Dibb presents a compelling portrayal of England's `It Girl' in The Duchess. Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza offer a Spanish suspense-thriller in Rec. An old prince unwittingly influences the lives of local people in Romania's Orient Express by Sergiu Nicolaescu. On the trail of a rare butterfly, the Zoo Rangers saves the rainforest from destruction in the Johan Nijenhuis-directed Zoop In Zuid Amerika (Zoo Rangers In South America) from The Netherlands.

Italy's I Demoni Di San Pietroburgo (The Demons of St. Petersburg) by Giuliano Montaldo is the story of writer Fyodor Dostoevsky and his search for the terrorist group responsible for the assassination of the Imperial Family. From Austria comes Freigesprochen (Free to Leave) by Peter Payer about the short moments that can change lives forever. Bernd Sahling's Die Blindganger (The Blind Flyers) follows the adventures of a group of blind musicians. E Pericoloso Sporgersi (Sundays On Leave) by Nae Caranfil is interestingly set in the late Ceausescu era of Romania. Love is like Santa, you have to believe in it in Joram Lunsen's film Alles Is Liefde (Love is All) which shows that love indeed conquers all. Another tale about love, Hynek Bocan's S Certy Nejsou Zerty (Give the Devil His Due) follows the story of Peter, a brave but poor young man who gets involved in a love triangle with two princesses.

Admission to Cine Europa 12 is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

For film screening schedules and other inquiries, please contact 633-7851.

After the screening in Shangri-La Plaza Mandaluyong, the films will be screened at Liceo de Cagayan De Oro from October 2 to 4 and Ayala Center Cebu from October 9 to 11.

blood donation

I'm sad that I wasn't able to donate blood to Philippine National Red
Cross today.

I was disqualified, and so were most of us in the office, because our
flu vaccine was last Aug. 3 only.

Add to this that I just had an operation last April and a myoma :(
The doctor said that a year after an operation has to pass before one
could donate blood in order for the effects of anesthesia and other
medicines to subside and the open wound to be clear of whatever :)

Too bad for my good intentions :( I don't think that there are many
type ABs here.

Hersheys

Thanks to my sweet tooth, chocolate companies are making profits :)
The thing is that I buy in bulks most of the time.

I didn't have any intention to buy any chocolate tonight. But since I
was already in the supermarket, I bought all these. My supermarket
complex attacked again :)

Unfortunately, I forgot to buy sweeteners for coffee. I haven't taken
any coffee since Thursday so the sweetener escaped my mind.

Bread Talk

I don't want to shop anymore this month but I need a new blazer for
our company's anniversary celebration.  So this Saturday, I wore out
my family, walking in and out of shops in Makati, looking for an
inexpensive blazer.  It seems everything costs thousands.  But my
perseverance paid off and I found one.

Unfortunately, we passed by Bread Talk.  In the absence of my favorite
Double Trouble, I bought Kick Kick.  But I couldn't help myself and
also bought the following products.

Whatever I managed to save from the blazer went to Bread Talk alone.

I told my mother afterwards, I will not buy these types of bread
again...that is, if I can prevent myself.  I spent hundreds only last
Sunday at French Baker, and a few days before that, at Manila
Pavilion's Patisserie.  And I could go on and on.

buying spree

After today's 3-day sale in SM Sta. Mesa, I will try to refrain from
shopping...at least until next month :)

Yesterday was literally window-shop/shop 'til you drop. My mother and
I left home at 2pm and we couldn't walk anymore so we left just before
11pm and decided to just come again.

Today, we left for SM before 6pm, so we only had 4 hours to look
around and shop. We immediately proceeded to Rusty Lopez and I was
disappointed that the shoes I wanted to buy for my nephew yesterday
had all been sold. I wasn't sure of his shoe size so I didn't buy
then. Anyway, after more than 3 hours of looking around, we went back
to Rusty Lopez and my nephew settled for another style.

I ended up buying the same style for myself for work. This is on top
of the two shoes (loafers and slip-ons) I bought yesterday and a Tribu
slipper from Toby's. Again, this is on top of the slippers I bought
in SM Manila last August 8 while my sister was looking around for
shoes on sale and the two shoes I bought last July 31. Granted that I
bought all of these at discounted prices, 5 shoes and 2 slippers in
just two weeks is a record for me. I remember that our priest once
told us to donate extra shoes.

Anyway, I also bought myself two shoulder bags yesterday and this is
on top of the two bags I bought last July 28 and 29.

A friend once called this buying spree as my supermarket complex.

Patisserie

After getting the depressing result of my ultrasound yesterday, I
could only think of one thing to lift my spirits – sweets. So from
Manila Doctors Hospital, I went to buy some at the nearby Patisserie,
inside Manila Pavilion Hotel.

post-operation ultrasound

The result of my ultrasound today saddens me...

The Half-Blood Prince

I finally saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince tonight.
I'm quite disappointed not to see some of my favorite scenes in the
book like The Other Minister and The White Tomb.
I don't understand some additional scenes, not in the book, such as
why the Weasleys' house was burned.
I love the depiction of Weasleys' Wizard Whizzes but I might have
missed the funny U-No-Poo poster or it just wasn't there.

harried day

It's a harried day. I didn't even have time to see if Harry Potter's
still showing :)

I've been running almost the whole day, I'm having leg cramps now.

I hurriedly left the office this Saturday morning to catch my doctor
in Delos Santos Hospital. I almost forgot that I need to get her
referral for an ultrasound. I planned on seeing her last Saturday but
it was raining heavily and former President Aquino died, so I was
glued on TV. Anyway, I ran to get a taxi to ensure that I'd get there
before 12nn, hurriedly took my lunch after seeing her and ran back to
the office. At 7pm, I ran to meet my sister and nephew at SM Manila.
We only had time to eat dinner, shopped for shoes and slippers (sale
at 10-50%, then my mother and I sent them off at Lawton.

But the day has not ended yet for me...

2009-08-04 inside Manila Cathedral for Tita Cory's Wake

It was 7:20pm when we got inside Manila Cathedral. My officemates and
I thought that when we got inside, we'd just line up to pay our last
respects for Tita Cory and be out again in 15 minutes. But we were
blocked and told that public viewing was on the opposite side. Those
inside had to hear the 8pm mass. We were so near and yet so far from
Tita Cory.

For the meantime, we had to contain our hunger.

Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal officiated the mass.

Ordinary and popular people, young and old, private employees and
public servants, students and working people, or simply, people from
all walks of life mingled in that mass, and in the queues inside and
outside the church.

After the mass, Bayan Ko was sung and people showed the Laban sign.

Kris Aquino-Yap's son Joshua generated people's interest.

Former Secretary Cesar Purisima managed the queue of those who attended mass.

Picture taking was not allowed once you crossed the line going to Tita Cory.

I found it funny that when we got out of the cathedral, some children
were saying congratulations, thank yous and giving out food (siopao,
boiled egg, banana) and water.

On our way out of Intramuros, we saw how long still the queues were.
We passed a long queue from Palacio del Governador going to PLM,
turning at DOLE. We believe that it will go straight ahead and turn
back to Manila Cathedral.

It has been raining hard and I feel so sorry for the children and
senior citizens still lining up to get a last glimpse of Tita Cory.

No wonder that the children giving out food were also saying congratulations.

2009-08-04 Tita Cory's Wake at the Manila Cathedral

We left for Manila Cathedral at 5:40pm. The traffic going there was
quite heavy.

The necrological service for former President Cory Aquino was still
ongoing when we got there and we had to wait until past 7pm before we
could get inside the cathedral.

Former DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman was in charge of the queue at the
main entrance. She kept reminding people to keep to their lines and
enter by groups of 10.

In that one hour of waiting, we braved the winds and the rains.

full circle

Our country seems to have come full circle with the death of former
President Cory Aquino. It feels like the end of an era...Ninoy's
convoy in 1983 and Cory's this Monday so similar and poignant. People
from all walks of life came together spontaneously. It's an era that
I don't think will be seen again. But hopefully, it is also the
beginning of a better one for all of us...since everyone is uniting to
embrace goodness, as seen in the life lived by the late President
Cory.

June 5-14, 2009: 14th French Film Festival

The 14th French Film Festival in Manila (June 5-14, 2009)

The festival opens on Friday, June 5, 2009 at 6:30 p.m.

at the Grand Atrium Level 2 of Shangri-La Plaza

The 62nd Cannes film festival marks a milestone in the history of Philippine cinema as Brillante "Dante" Mendoza becomes the first Filipino to be awarded the "Best Director" prize for his film "Kinatay." 2009 will also be remembered as the year that saw five Filipino films in the different sections of the festival: "Kinatay" in the Official Competition, "Independencia" by Raya Martin in Un Certain Regard, "Manila" by Adolfo Alix, Jr and Raya Martin in the Special Screening, "Sabongero" by Janice Perez and "Manong Maong" by Aissa Peñafiel and Miguel Ocampo in the Short Film Corner.

In celebration of this event, the 14th French Film Festival in Manila will be held from June 5-14, 2009 at the Shang Cineplex of Shangri-La Plaza. It will feature a retrospective of 14 French films which have been presented at the Cannes film festival, as well as a sneak preview of the Filipino film "Independencia", which premiered at Cannes earlier this month.

The festival will open on June 5 with the film "Home" by the famous French photographer Yann Arthus Bertrand. Shot entirely from the sky in high definition, "Home" is a documentary about the stunning beauty of our planet and the alarming danger it faces. It will also be the first movie to be released simultaneously on all media (theatre, TV, DVD and Internet) across 5 continents, as part of World Environment Day, which also be celebrated worldwide on June 5 (www.goodplanet.org).

On June 12, Independence Day, the festival will present a sneak preview of "Independencia". Produced by Arleen Cuevas, the film has received assistance from the French government through the Fonds Sud Cinema, a grant offered by the French Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

There will be four screenings each day of the festival. All films are open to the public with free admission on a first-come, first-served basis. The French films that will be screened include François Truffaut's "Les 400 Coups" (1959), André Téchiné's "Ma Saison Préférée" (1993), Michael Haneke's "La Pianiste" (2001) and Benoît Jaquot's "A tout de suite" (2004). For screening schedules, you may call 633-2277 or visit www.spot.ph.

For Filipino cinephiles who will not be able to attend the Manila screenings, there will also be a French Film Festival in Cebu which will run from June 19-21 at the Ayala Center Cebu. This event will feature many of the same films that will be shown in Manila.

The French Film Festival is organized by the French Embassy to the Philippines, together with CulturesFrance and Alliance Française de Manille, with the generous support of Shangri-La Plaza, the Shang Cineplex, Pioneer Films and Spot.ph. The French Film Festival in Cebu is organized through the efforts of Les Amis de la France and with the cooperation of the Arts Council of Cebu, and Ayala Center Cebu.

The logo of the festival shows the intertwined laurel branch of the Cannes Film Festival and a coconut branch to symbolize the strong cultural ties between France and the Philippines through cinema.

Dios ti agngina

Muchas gracias, xiexie ni, merci beaucoup mes amis.

Thank you (in different languages) for all your encouragements, text
messages, emails, gifts, visits, and most importantly, prayers.

I got out of De los Santos Medical Center in the afternoon of Maundy
Thursday. I had to wait for my doctor to give my medications and to
set our next meeting.

This Wednesday is my first day without any medication, meaning pain
reliever and antibiotic. I also feel more normal than the past days.
Other than a nerve still hurting from the dextrose inserted on my
left hand, a few moments when I feel cold and shake from sudden
weakness, and a lower abdomen that feels like it has been sunburned, I
am fine.

My doctor had to remove my left ovary. I must have already accepted
it even before the operation as I don't feel sad about it. My mother
had a harder time -- not knowing how to answer me -- when I asked her
which was removed, the cyst or the ovary. Prior to the operation, I
told her to stay by the operating room as she would need to speak for
me while I was happily out from relaxant and anesthesia. My doctor
warned me earlier that this would be a more difficult operation since
it's a recurrence. The gory details of my hospital stay could be a
subject in my blog :)

Before I went to the hospital, I attended a Palm Sunday mass in Bacood
and asked our parish priest to bless me. I also told the Lord, "I'll
see you here on Thursday." :)

So, I met with the Lord, last Thursday afternoon's mass, up on my feet :)
